Solar batteries allow you to use significantly more of the energy generated by your solar PV system. This also helps reduce peak evening demand on the grid, which in turn helps reduce our reliance in fossil fuels.

The key elements of a solar battery

Storage Capacity

The storage capacity of the battery is a measure of how much energy the battery can hold – the average storage of a modern solar battery is in the region of 10 kWh. This is enough to power an average home for the evening.

Storage vs Off-Grid

Not all batteries are designed to supply energy to your home during a blackout. Most are designed to only store energy generated during the day, until needed during evening hours. If you require ‘Off Grid’ you need to decide which appliances within your house you want to power (fridge, a few lights and a power outlet?), calculate the power required to run these and choose a battery size that meets this requirement. You also need to know the length of time that you want to power these items.

Hybrid or Coupled

Hybrid batteries have a solar inverter build into the system and do not require and external inverter as a step between the battery and the solar PV. Coupled batteries plug into an external inverter which then connects to the Solar PV.

Discharge Rates

The charge and discharge rates of your battery will impact the speed at which it will charge, and the amount of energy you can draw to power your home. For example, if your battery has a 2.3 kW discharge rate, and the load in your home is 3.3 kW, you will draw 2.3 kW from the battery and 1.0 kW from the grid, even if your battery has full charge. Similarly, if your solar is generating 4.6 kW, and the load in the house is 1.0 kW, only 2.3 kW will feed into your battery, with the 1.3 kW flowing back to the grid.
