BYD started in Shenzhen in 1995 as a rechargeable battery manufacturer, years before the company built its first vehicle. That order matters. Battery chemistry and cell manufacturing are the foundation the rest of the business was built on, not a division added later to capture a growing market.

That background carries through to the Battery-Box range installed in Melbourne homes today. BYD manufactures its own lithium iron phosphate cells, rather than sourcing them from a third party and assembling a battery around someone else's chemistry.

BYD has delivered more than 75 GWh of battery energy storage equipment across 350 projects in over 110 countries and regions worldwide. On the residential side specifically, BYD passed 1.5 million installed Battery-Box home storage systems worldwide.

That scale matters for a homeowner in a practical way. A manufacturer running production lines at gigawatt-hour volume has the consistency and quality control that a smaller battery brand cannot match cell for cell. It also means spare parts, firmware updates and technical documentation are backed by a company that is not relying on a single factory or a single market to stay in business.
